Gina McCarthy | Sport2021
Who would have thought that a girl who cried the entire time at her first swimming competition at 6 years old would still be swimming and now a multiple New Zealand Age Group record holder, definitely not me! My name is Gina McCarthy and for as long as I can remember I have been in the water. I started my journey as a competitive swimmer at 6 years old and now at 18 years old I am still going and loving it more than ever. I am currently a Year 13 student at Waikato Diocesan School for Girls and planning on doing a Bachelor of Nursing at Wintec next year.
You will often find me walking around the swimming pool with my bright pink crocs on or doing Tiktok dances behind the blocks before my races. I like to keep things fun and quirky but always knuckle down when it’s time to step up and race.
I have gotten so much out of swimming that it is only right I give back in some way. I am currently a nationally qualified Inspector of turns and working towards my regional starter qualification. I am also a learn to swim instructor passing on my swimming knowledge to 3 to 12-year-olds.
