Meet @harrisonthrows!! Another Tauranga representative who is kindly supported by the legends over at @tectnz. Harrison attended Aquinas College and competes in three throwing events - Shot Put, Discuss and Hammer Throw! When Harrison was a little takka he wanted to be an All Black which is the pinnacle for a Rugby player but has shifted his sights to hopefully one day represent Aotearoa at the Olympic Games and become a fully paid professional thrower! A huge motivation in Harrison’s life is to continue to succeed in his sport, by doing his best and reaching his goals. Harrison feels the rewards aren’t just his own but also belong to those that support him especially his Coach and whānau!

Harrison has had some incredible achievements in his Athletic career and a couple he is super proud of was placing second at the Oceania Championships for U18 Shot Put in 2022 and securing a Bronze medal at the Australia Championship in the U20 category for shot put last year!! Harrison is a super dedicated young man whose hard work has paid off and has most recently been singed to “Drake University Bulldogs” and will join the Drake Bulldog throwing team in Iowa, USA later this year!

Harrison heard of us through word of mouth and said our “ it seemed like a great scholarship to help my sporting goals”. Since gaining The Adastra Foundation scholarship Harrison is loving the support and funding which has helped him with a trip to Australia which was extremely beneficial in gaining experience in the throwing circle overseas and getting a taste of international competition! Harrison also mentions “it’s great that there is a big focus on athlete development outside of the gym and other training facilities”.

We absolutely support you all the way mate and can’t wait to see what you can do in the near future! As always thank you to our supporters and funders for creating opportunities and experiences for our recipients!

Meet @sylv_green !! Born and raised in England until the age of 7, Sylvester and his whānau moved to Tauranga where he also began his passion for playing the Trumpet! Sylvester currently attends Tauranga Boys College.

Sylvester has some epic achievements and we would like to highlight a couple that we think are outstanding! Sylvester was awarded the Edwina Thorne trophy for most outstanding trumpet player at the National Youth Jazz Competition in 2022! He is also very proud to have been called up to fill in for the “Rodger Fox Big Band” the top Big Band in NZ for the past 40yrs and playing very well in front of the late Rodger Fox!!

Sylvester has three quotes that he froths and likes to remember on the daily!!
1. Whether you think you can, or whether you think you cannot, you are correct.
2. How big would you dream if you knew you could not fail?
3. What if it all works out?

We rate these quotes highly and think they link in perfectly with Sylvester’s Goals of wanting to push the possibilities of Jazz Trumpet in Aotearoa and continuing to be his best self through small actions that will hopefully make the world a nicer place. So simply and beautifully put by Sylvester “What I can do today is because of what I did yesterday. And so, what I do today enables tomorrow”

Sylvester heard about The Adastra Foundation through word of mouth and was excited to find that they want to support people like himself! He said “ I applied because it gives me more support and another reason to work so hard. It’s like having a team that always cheers you on from your corner” “ I am very grateful for the support from Adastra and for the investment in me. I loved the workshop and come back to the materials every so often!

We wish you all the best for the future and can’t thank our funders enough especially the team over @tectnz

Meet @hannah_.mason ! Another recipient from the atāhua city of Tauranga. Hannah attends Otumoetai College and lives by being Determined, Diligent and Competitive! She lives by her top 3 values of Dedication, Loyalty and Perseverance which is super relevant in her sport of Bmx Racing!

Something that fills Hannah’s cup is Reading! It’s a place that makes her feel safe and calm, it provides her with an escape from the real world as it gets rid of stress and fears that can arise from Sports or everyday life.

Hannah is most proud of making her first amateur UCI BMX World Championship final in the 16 year girls last year in Glasgow and most recently being selected for this years UCI BMX World Championships as a Junior Women and competing in Rock Hill, SC - USA!!

In five years time Hannah would like to be studying plant ecology at University, hopefully attending Otago or possibly transfer to the UK to study! Hannah wants to ensure that she finds a good balance which allows her to continue to participate in her chosen Sport and enjoy it!

Hannah says the support that Adastra and all the funders provide allows her to gain her full potential for her sport and has helped her further improve her mental skills thanks to the sports psychologist at our recent workshop! She’s really looking forward to some nutrition work in our up and coming session! A massive thank you to @tectnz for supporting Hannah on her journey!!
