Oliver Larcombe | Sport
2022Hi, I’m Oliver Larcombe, I am a triathlete in the NZ Junior Elite Team.
My journey to excel in what I set my sights on, is based on the values of hard work, determination, and sportsmanship. These values I have and will always cherish.
When I first started triathlon, I really enjoyed it and decided that was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
The attitude I approach everything with is similar to how I tackle my training. For example; If I get home from school late or have a really busy day, I will always find a way to fit in my training, even if it is a 4-hour ride and it’s raining outside. I do this to myself because I know that if I don’t, somebody else will potentially be gaining an edge on me.
Every sporting goal I have had has been given the same approach. I look at what the goal is and determine what is needed to be done in order to give me the best chance at achieving what I set out to do in my targeted races. At the start of most triathlon seasons, my performances can look, from an outsider’s perspective, very unconvincing. However, I use these preliminary races to constantly build on what I need, so it is all part of the longer-term plan.
By the end of the season, the situation I have found myself in recently, when the training and the approach to the season comes together, is a situation that leaves me achieving results such as:
– 1st in NZ Secondary Schools Triathlon Championships for under 16 boys in 2019.
– 1st in NZ Secondary Schools Triathlon Championships for under 19 boys in 2020
– 1st in NZ Secondary Schools Triathlon Championships for under 19 boys in 2021
– 1st NZ Triathlon Open Junior Elite 2021
I am proud of my success so far but there will always be more to give and achieve through well-planned hard work and dedication.
