I’m Travis, a 17-year-old from Whakatane, living with my mum. I started rowing in 2019, inspired by my sister. I was the youngest in my crew, often seen as the “weakest link,” but I pushed through. My first race was intense, leaving my legs like jelly, but our performance got us into the A finals. My mum proudly shared the news, and I’ll never forget the “winner’s breakfast” I received the next morning.
Despite early struggles and setbacks, like my dad leaving in 2020 and losing my rowing partner just before a major race, I stayed committed. I kept showing up to training, even when it seemed pointless. Over time, things improved—my coach began supporting me differently, and I started to excel. After a tough period, I eventually found success with a new rowing partner, and we had a standout season, winning at Maadi and receiving the Team of the Year award at my school.
Beyond rowing, I love mountain biking and tinkering. I restored a dirt bike, and my favourite subject at school is Product Development.
I’m eager to continue rowing at a higher level, and this scholarship would provide the financial support I need to focus on my athletic goals. With this help, I can dedicate myself fully to rowing, which will also contribute to my personal growth and success in all areas of my life.
