Aimee Ferguson | Sport
2020Hello, My name is Aimee Ferguson. I am currently a Year 13 foundation student at Rototuna Senior High School.
Growing up in the Waikato I have been fortunate enough to participate in a variety of sports including netball, touch rugby, cricket, waterpolo/flipperball, basketball, tennis, squash, football and running, often committing to several codes at one time. This allowed me to grow as a person and develop various skills, both physically and emotionally. However football, cross country and athletics have become my focus in recent years. Over the past three years I have represented New Zealand on five different occasions, coinciding with my most crucial NCEA years. Although sport is a major part of my life, I strive to do my best at school. Competing often means missing school, however I’ve always tried to maintain a high standard with my studies.
As an athlete I have experienced both losses and success. To date, my greatest international achievement is placing 5th, one second behind 3rd place at the 2018 World Secondary School Cross Country Championships in Paris, France. Last year also, I won the New Zealand under 18 1500m and Cross Country titles. Since 2016 I have placed either 2nd or 3rd in the 1500m and 3000m at the New Zealand Secondary School Athletics
Championships. At this year’s Austrailan Track and Field Championship I finished 4th in the 1500m. I have also represented the New Zealand Secondary School team at the Australian Cross Country Championship for the past three years.
Over the past two years I have been involved in training and encouraging younger students. In 2017/18 I participated in a school project, working with local primary school students, planning and conducting PE sessions. I have also coached the Rototuna Junior High School WIMS/AIMS cross country teams for several weeks leading up to competitions.
Making New Zealand teams is a huge achievement, however this does come at a cost. Over the past three years my parents have been instrumental in supporting me in every event, both nationally and abroad. This has involved time, travel and fundraising. We held a variety of events, such as car washes and movie nights, plus sourcing sponsorship from local businesses.
In conclusion, I would like to say that I am determined and dedicated to fulfilling my potential as an athlete. An Adastra Foundation Scholarship would greatly assist me to achieve my goals.
Thank you for considering my application.
