2018Luke Mitchell – Swimmer St Peter’s Swimming Club
I am a 17 years old student in my final year at St Peter’s School in Cambridge. This year I have taken up the role of Hanna House leader which means that I am organising school competitions for the students to compete in for their different houses. These events include athletics, swimming sports, cross country, debating and house music. By having this opportunity of working with leaders and other students throughout the school it has allowed me to grow as both an individual and as a leader. Next year I’m hoping to use these experiences to study at Waikato University to undertake a Bachelor of Education in primary school teaching.
This year I’ve also taken up the responsibility of St Peter’s Swimming Club Captain and it’s a role I’m really looking forward to, as it will allow me to work and help the younger swimmers coming through the club, as well as supporting the swimmers training around me.
Being a competitive swimmer for the past 9 years has given me some wonderful opportunities where I’ve gained national medals in the pool and in open water events as well as being a member of the TAPS (Train, Achieve, Perform) Squad for Waikato Swimming. I’ve also been part of the NZ Pathway to Podium Programme and have travelled oversea to attend several international meets. Being in this sporting environment and the people you meet along the way has only made me want to go further in my sport in the future.
