TANNER FAMILY

Hi my name is a Bradley Rothwell. I was born and raised in a small town of Whakatane in the sunny Bay of Plenty. Family is hugely important to me, I am the eldest of 3 children and have grown up with a large supportive wider family who have always encouraged and supported me in all of my sporting interests. Originally playing football from the age of 4, I picked up a hockey stick when I was about 8 years old, being introduced by my cousin and uncle. Hockey has quickly become my passion and obsession with me taking every opportunity to pick up a stick and play.
Throughout my hockey journey I’ve had reasonable success; being part of the successful Whakatane Intermediate team that won the AIMS Games Boys Hockey, Mayhill Cup winning team with Trident High School, and making Bay of Plenty U13, U15 and U18 representative teams finishing 3rd and 2nd in two of those teams at National Tournaments. My latest achievement being selected for the U18 New Zealand National Performance Camp at the age of 16. In the off season, I really enjoy water skiing with my wider family, mountain biking, hunting and many other sports such as Volleyball and Football to name a few, Being a typical teenager socializing with friends is also very important to me.
As well as succeeding on the hockey turf success in the classroom is just as important to me. Having already achieved NCEA Level 1 with Excellence I’m hoping to repeat these results for Level 2. A moto that has guided me over the years is. ‘Results will be what they will be, as long as you’ve given it your best…and enjoy yourself’.

Since picking up a hockey stick as an 8-year-old, I’ve had the dream of becoming a Black Stick. Growing up in sunny Whakatane, I played for Apanui Primary, Whakatane Intermediate and Trident High School along with representing BOP Hockey at all junior age levels. Upon completion of High School, I left home and moved to Hamilton to begin an Electrical Apprenticeship with ETCO and to also be closer to the major centres for my Hockey Development. Over the past 4 years I’ve had the privilege of being selected for:
• U18 Future Black Sticks Camp,
• Waikato NHC side,
• U21 Junior Black Sticks squad to compete at the Junior world cup in India.
• I’ve also had the Honour of representing our region ‘The Mavericks’ in the newly formed PHL (Premier Hockey League) as well as captaining the U21 side at the JHL (Junior Hockey League).
• Vantage Black Stick Men’s side to compete for the 2025 Oceania Cup
My future hopes are to continue my hockey development becoming a regular member of the Vantage Black Sticks squad, along with completing my apprenticeship. When I do manage to get away from the hockey turf, I enjoy spending time with friends and family at the Lake, waterskiing and relaxing in the water / sun.
