Meet @elliott.pugh !! Born in Germany and raised in Tauranga, where he attended Bethlehem College. Elliott’s core values revolve around dedication, discipline, and patience. These values have encouraged Elliott’s progression in his sport which has flowed into his success including a few of his proudest achievements which are placing 4th at the Year 9 Cross Country Nationals, 2nd at the Junior Boys Cross Country Nationals, and taking out the top spot for U18 at the Marra Triathlon back in 2022.
At the age of 10, Elliott’s main goal was to become a professional football player, and currently, his aspirations include winning an NCAA title, representing Aotearoa at the Olympic Games, and pursuing a career as a professional runner!!
Elliott applied for the Adastra Foundation scholarship because he saw it as a valuable opportunity to learn and connect with peers who share similar ambitions!! Elliott said, “He greatly appreciates the support and funding provided by the Adastra Foundation. The assistance I have received has been invaluable, and I would enthusiastically recommend their program to others.” We wish you nothing but the best for your future endeavours, a massive thank you to all our funders, and a special thank you to @tectnz for your support in Elliott and all our Tauranga-based recipients! ... Meet @erinwyllie_squash , a talented Squash Athlete hailing from Bath, England, now living in Tauranga where she attends Otumoetai College! Erin holds some incredible values close to her which include gratitude, passion, energy, ambition, and kindness.
Erins proudest achievements include making the “A grade” at just 16, representing New Zealand in the Trans Tasman team, and winning the NZ Secondary Schools Tournament 3 years in a row as well as making it into the NZ secondary schools team who face the aussies every year!
When not on the court, Erin finds peace in watching sunrises and sunsets, especially by the beach or on hikes, where she journals her thoughts and goals. She finds a good balance to ensure Family and Friends are still a priority!
Since age 10, Erin’s goal has been to excel in squash and climb the rankings. Her motivation stems from early morning practices with her dad, instilling a relentless drive to stay ahead in her sport! In five years, she aims to be a top-ranked international player, advocating for Squash globally and pushing hard for a chance to represent Aotearoa in the Commonwealth Games and potentially the Olympics!
Erin lives by the motto, “If you aren’t going all the way, why go at all,” and applied for the Adastra Scholarship to support her journey to major tournaments and enhance her game. Erins says “having this support will definitely benefit my Squash game because it isn’t all about skill and fitness and I am so grateful for all the funding”. As well as @tectnz supporting our Tauranga based recipients, we are delighted to welcome BDO as a new sponsor to our programme this year, who are following Erin’s journey closely. We appreciate your support of our recipients hugely!! ... See MoreSee Less

Meet @harrisonthrows!! Another Tauranga representative who is kindly supported by the legends over at @tectnz. Harrison attended Aquinas College and competes in three throwing events - Shot Put, Discuss and Hammer Throw! When Harrison was a little takka he wanted to be an All Black which is the pinnacle for a Rugby player but has shifted his sights to hopefully one day represent Aotearoa at the Olympic Games and become a fully paid professional thrower! A huge motivation in Harrison’s life is to continue to succeed in his sport, by doing his best and reaching his goals. Harrison feels the rewards aren’t just his own but also belong to those that support him especially his Coach and whānau!
Harrison has had some incredible achievements in his Athletic career and a couple he is super proud of was placing second at the Oceania Championships for U18 Shot Put in 2022 and securing a Bronze medal at the Australia Championship in the U20 category for shot put last year!! Harrison is a super dedicated young man whose hard work has paid off and has most recently been singed to “Drake University Bulldogs” and will join the Drake Bulldog throwing team in Iowa, USA later this year!
Harrison heard of us through word of mouth and said our “ it seemed like a great scholarship to help my sporting goals”. Since gaining The Adastra Foundation scholarship Harrison is loving the support and funding which has helped him with a trip to Australia which was extremely beneficial in gaining experience in the throwing circle overseas and getting a taste of international competition! Harrison also mentions “it’s great that there is a big focus on athlete development outside of the gym and other training facilities”.
We absolutely support you all the way mate and can’t wait to see what you can do in the near future! As always thank you to our supporters and funders for creating opportunities and experiences for our recipients! ... See MoreSee Less
Meet @sylv_green !! Born and raised in England until the age of 7, Sylvester and his whānau moved to Tauranga where he also began his passion for playing the Trumpet! Sylvester currently attends Tauranga Boys College.
Sylvester has some epic achievements and we would like to highlight a couple that we think are outstanding! Sylvester was awarded the Edwina Thorne trophy for most outstanding trumpet player at the National Youth Jazz Competition in 2022! He is also very proud to have been called up to fill in for the “Rodger Fox Big Band” the top Big Band in NZ for the past 40yrs and playing very well in front of the late Rodger Fox!!
Sylvester has three quotes that he froths and likes to remember on the daily!! 1. Whether you think you can, or whether you think you cannot, you are correct. 2. How big would you dream if you knew you could not fail? 3. What if it all works out?
We rate these quotes highly and think they link in perfectly with Sylvester’s Goals of wanting to push the possibilities of Jazz Trumpet in Aotearoa and continuing to be his best self through small actions that will hopefully make the world a nicer place. So simply and beautifully put by Sylvester “What I can do today is because of what I did yesterday. And so, what I do today enables tomorrow”
Sylvester heard about The Adastra Foundation through word of mouth and was excited to find that they want to support people like himself! He said “ I applied because it gives me more support and another reason to work so hard. It’s like having a team that always cheers you on from your corner” “ I am very grateful for the support from Adastra and for the investment in me. I loved the workshop and come back to the materials every so often!
We wish you all the best for the future and can’t thank our funders enough especially the team over @tectnz ... See MoreSee Less
